Biscuits for prom....

My first ever blog, wow!  I'm married with two teenage daughters. I work in a school and I love to bake.  My 18 year old daughter has her own beauty blog as she loves trying out new beauty products. It gave me the idea to start my own blog about what I am passionate about - baking!

The name 'Ladies that bake' came from a teacher at school - I was running a cake stall at the school's Summer Fair with two office friends and he took a photo of us. He named it 'Ladies that bake' and the name stuck. We now have our own pink gingham aprons and help run/organise various charity cake sales at school. We also volunteered to bake favours for the year 11 prom last year. We made iced biscuits - a lovely dress for the girls and a bow tie for the boys (see photos below). I searched for a decent 'gown shaped cutter' on UK websites but then fell in love with one on an American website called ecrandal.com.  I emailed them and they agreed to send the cutters to the UK.  It was definitely worth the effort as the cutters (gown and bowtie) are handmade in copper. We will be using them again this year, just changing the colour of the flowers on the dresses and the organza bags.

It does take a lot of time and preparation to make about 230 iced biscuits but it is also very satisfying.  The un-iced biscuits can be frozen which is ideal as it means you can bake ahead. We used a flower patterned embossing mat to imprint on the dress and a swirl patterned embossing mat for the bow ties. The trick is keeping the finished biscuits fresh and we managed this by packaging them up in groups of ten. We did not put them in the organza bags until just before the prom and then laid them out on the tables before the students arrived.

That's it for now, take care until next time.....x
